Neglect or acts of omission

Neglect or acts of omission

This could include ignoring medical or physical care needs, and the withholding of necessities such as medication and adequate nutrition.

It can also include refusal of access to visitors or isolating the person, as well as not taking into account a person’s cultural, religious or ethnic needs, and failure to ensure privacy and dignity.

Signs of neglect could be:

  • someone's clothes are ill-fitting, unclean and in poor condition or they are in poor physical condition, for example, because of rapid weight loss
  • someone's home has become dirty or unhygienic despite the presence of 'care'
  • a person who is housebound due to frailty or disability, is left alone for long periods of time, or not supported to go out or access social activities
  • a person has untreated injuries or medical problems, and is not getting the help they need
